TOO HEAVY
It wasn't a pretty sight! I was packing my clothes to go on a Mission very recently. Or, rather, my wife was packing for me, and asked which suits to include. With a knowing look, she suggested I tried on the trousers. I couldn't do them up. My middle was - how can I put this delicately? - out of control.
I stood on the scales, and the horrible truth was there, as Ruth reminded me how much I had weighed on our wedding day 30 years ago. It had - well - grown on me! My scales are not lying. I'm too heavy.
It's like that, standing on God's scales. "The Lord weights the heart", the Bible tells us. And we are all overweight. Our unkindnesses, our selfishness, our greed, our untruths - the list could go on - have made us large with sin. The clothes of heaven won't fit us.
What can I do about my weight, so I can get into my suit trousers again? My wife has put me into the hands of one of those slimming "experts", and I'm on their diet. It had better work - the food's not what I want, yet the bill for new clothes is the unpleasant alternative!
But, for my life, God has a much better plan. He says to me, "My son, give me your heart". He knows I can't change my life enough to get rid of all my wrongdoing, so he steps in to solve the problem.
God send his only son, Jesus, who is the weight expert. Jesus was never overweight. His perfect life was full of love, kindness and generosity. He allowed himself to be killed on a cross. While he was hanging there, God his Father took all the weight of our sin and gave it to Jesus to carry in his own body instead of us - and it killed him.
Now the weight has gone, and Jesus has been raised from the dead. He comes to our lives and says, "Give me your heart. I will free you from the burden of your sin, and clothe you in my eternal life".
I'm glad there's a "slimming expert" for my body. But I'm thrilled there's a Saviour called Jesus who has taken the weight of my sin, and given me a new life.
Give him your burden today - the weight of your sin, your pain, your hurts and bereavements.
"Lord Jesus, I give you my whole life now. Please come and live in my heart. Wash away all my sin. Fill me with your Holy Spirit. Thank you that you will never leave me"
E-mail me at office@fortythreetrust.com today if that is your prayer. And may God bless you very much!
