Why look closer?
Because things aren’t always what they seem! Many years ago a museum in
County Durham had to
stop displaying a Roman coin from the second century AD. Why?
Because a nine-year-old boy looked
closer and realised it wasn’t a Roman coin, but it was in fact a
plastic token given away in a promotion
by a soft-drinks company. It's hard to believe that so many people
didn't realise what its real identity
was.
Things aren’t always what they seem!
For many years Head & Shoulders advertised their shampoo with the
catchphrase: ‘You never get a
second chance to make a first impression’. It was a great
catchphrase; the advertiser knew that people
often make decisions based upon first impressions. It is no
different with Christianity. Many people not
only view Christianity from their own perspectives and never see it
from the angle of experience, but they
often base their whole view of Christianity upon first impressions.
A friend of mine often says: “Most people’s understanding of
Christianity is actually a
misunderstanding.” He’s right. On my travels as a freelance
speaker, I meet many people who have
made up their minds about God and Christianity and come to the
decision that “it's not for me” without
really taking a closer look. ‘Never judge a book by its cover’, the
old saying goes and yet this is done so
many times with God and Christianity. It is an almost obvious thing
to say, but it is only when you know
what Christianity actually is that you can know what Christianity
is not!
